is glass fusing an expensive hobby?

22 May 2026

If you’ve found yourself thinking “I’d love to try glass fusing… but it seems like an expensive hobby”, do not fear! Glass fusing can definitely be an expensive hobby… but only if you’re planning on starting completely from scratch.

Like most creative hobbies, there’s a bit of a spectrum to bear in mind. On one hand, you’ve got full professional glass fusing studios with kilns, specialist tools, and shelves full of colourful glass sheets (like ours!). On the other, you’ve got our make-at-home glass fusing kits, which simply require a cup of tea and your imagination.

As you’ll soon see, there’s a huge monetary difference between the two options available.

why is glass fusing expensive?

Glass fusing is usually considered an expensive hobby because of the amount of specialist equipment and materials you need to get started.

If you wanted to create a basic at-home glass fusing studio in the UK, you’d be looking at paying anywhere between £800 to £3,000+ for the privilege:

Entry-level glass kiln

£500 to £2000+

Kiln shelves and kiln wash

£50 to £150

Starter sheets of fusible glass

£100 to £300

Glass cutters and hand tools

£30 to £150

Safety equipment

£30 to £100

Storage tubs, organisers, shelving, and protected work surfaces

£50 to £300

Electricity for kiln firing (depending on kiln size and frequency)

£3 to £15+ per firing

Consumables (kiln paper, fibre paper, replacements, adhesives, glass paint, cleaning materials, etc.)

£10 to £50 per month

Decorative finishing extras (hanging ribbons and rings, wire, jingle bells, glitter, packaging, etc.)

£50 to £200+ over time

And that’s before you’ve even made your first wonderfully wonky creation!

can glass fusing be affordable?

Here’s where you can take a big sigh of relief. You don’t actually need a kiln, specialist tools, or a studio filled with coloured glass sheets to enjoy making fused glass creations.

In fact, this is the very reason why make-at-home fused glass kits are a thing. You still get the creativity and the joy of designing… with the guarantee of a professionally-finished fused glass decoration at the end.

You simply design your fused glass decoration and send it back to us. We’ll fire it, then send your finished masterpiece back home to you. Much easier.

value over cost

Glass fusing can be an expensive hobby if you want a professional set-up, but when you’re investing in make-at-home fused glass kits, you’re building a decoration designed to last.

Once kiln-fired at our Essex glass fusing studio, your decoration will be returned to you as a professionally finished decorative piece, ready to hang and display. Not like paper crafts destined for the recycling bin or stuffed into the back of a cupboard!

After designing your fused glass decoration, you can use it as:

Fused glass is also extremely durable when cared for properly. To keep your decoration looking fresh, simply give it a wipe down with a damp microfibre cloth and pH-neutral dish soap, then dry.
